Program

In the footsteps of travelers on the Grand Tour, the itinerary develops in the south-eastern part of Sicily, between ancient and modern, classicism and baroque; in a context of naturalistic and eno-gastronomic interest, it crosses archaeological sites and topical places for seventeenth-century architecture, offering an extraordinary comparison between abandoned cities and cities rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake.

Saturday 13 October

From 8.30 am

visit of Noto Antica the original city abandoned by the inhabitants after the earthquake of 1693, in which stretches of ancient walls and ruins of buildings remain among valleys rich in vegetation and necropolis;

visit of Noto, the city rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. Visits to its churches and its baroque scenographies with an eye to the work of the architect Rosario Gagliardi and his circle;

visit of Palazzolo Acreide, to the archaeological area with the ancient Greek theater; visit to the city below, the original medieval site and to the city above rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. Visit to the exhibition "Images tell the city", organized by the International Center for Studies on Baroque;

Dinner in Syracuse

Sunday 14 October

From 8.30 am

visit of Modica to its churches with spectacular tower-façades and an urban context of great interest;

visit of Ragusa, in particular of Ragusa Ibla, the original neighborhood, urban with the church-masterpiece of Rosario Gagliardi; visit to the MUSAC "Museum of History of Architecture and Construction in the Mediterranean" in Palazzo La Rocca.

visit of Scicli, its numerous baroque churches and its spectacular buildings such as the Palazzo Beneventano.

Monday 15th October

Departure from Syracuse with return to the respective places of origin

How to participate

The fee of 47 euros will be to be subscribed by September 30, at the AISU website (link visamas); the fee includes the bus tour and the social dinner. Apart from the trip to Syracuse, the overnight stays and other meals remain the responsibility of the participants; the participants must book directly (preferably within the same date of September 15), starting from the list of hotels and hostels indicated below, according to a very diversified economic offer. We remind you that the approach trip to Syracuse, for those coming from the continent, will necessarily have to go through Catania airport, well connected to all the major centers of the peninsula, as well as served by many low-cost lines. also in this case, it is necessary to book promptly.

This is the list of hotels we have selected, according to a range of prices ranging from a minimum of 30 euros for the hostel to a maximum of 80 euros for the hotel: all include breakfast in the room price. We invite you to personally book the overnight stay in these three sites, all located in Syracuse and close to each other; please do not look for other accommodations, so as to respect a proximity criterion that will allow us to easily organize the departures and arrivals of the daily bus tour.
